Alpha Upsilon History
Alpha Upsilon Chapter was organized April 18, 1963 in Asheboro, NC by Margaret Flintom, State Expansion Chairman. The territory comprises Asheboro and Randolph County. Alpha Upsilon territory had been included in Chi Chapter area in High Point and part of Guilford, Davidson and Randolph Counties.
The chapter had nineteen charter members. For the organizational meeting, seven members came from Chi Chapter and two from Alpha Sigma. After organizational ceremonies, officers were elected and installed: Inez Lewallen, President; Willie B. Riddle, First Vice-president; Margaret Lane, Second Vice-president; Polly Powell, Recording Secretary; Leona Wood, Corresponding Secretary. Bertha Councilman was appointed Treasurer and continued in this position.
The second president, 1964-1966, was Julia Ross Lambert. Officers serving with her were Louise Thomas, First Vice-president; Margaret Lane, Second Vice-president; Polly Powell, Corresponding Secretary; Helen Bostic, Recording Secretary and Bertha Councilman, Treasurer. The Alpha Upsilon Chapter was co-hostess at the state meeting in Durham during this year.
Mae Blackwelder and her officers came in at a time when creativity was being stressed through programs. The group followed the International Program brochure -- a practice which was continued. President Mae Blackwelder, 1966-1968, was assisted by Carolyn Chisholm, First Vice-President; Nancy Adkins, Second Vice-president; Laura Sumner, Recording Secretary; Leona Wood, Corresponding Secretary and Bertha Councilman, Treasurer.
The years of 1968-1970 were memorable times for Alpha Upsilon Chapter. The chapter held the Regional V meeting, with all members working faithfully to make it an outstanding event. The leaders during this time were Nancy Welborn, President; Doris Tatum, First Vice-president; Ollie Rich, Second Vice-president; Laura Sumner, Recording Secretary; Irene Manning, Corresponding Secretary and Bertha Councilman, Treasurer.
Alpha Upsilon Chapter continued steady growth in membership and leadership. In April 1992 the chapter divided to form our Sister Chapter Delta Nu. The two chapters continue an ongoing project of funding Grant-in-Aid Endowments honoring Donna Lee Loflin, Leona Wood, Bertha Councilman and Inez Lewallen Spence. The dedicated sister of longest continuous membership from April 1, 1965, Nancy R. Welborn, serves as an interested Reserve member. This is Alpha Upsilon Chapter’s 30th biennium.
